Jingkieng Jri: Active Stewardship of Living Architecture

Jingkieng Jri

The Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai (Living Root Bridges) require continuous, hand-guided care across generations. Active conservation ensures these biological structures remain safe, healthy, and structurally resilient.

01

Root Guidance & Maintenance

Experienced master bridge-weavers routinely inspect aerial roots, adjust bamboo scaffolds (‘Siej), and bind new offshoots of Ficus elastica trees to reinforce load-bearing spans.

02

Ecosystem Health Monitoring

Local village sub-committees monitor canopy health, riverbank stability, soil erosion, and surrounding vegetation to prevent biological stress on the host trees.

03

Structural Safeguards

Implementing foot-traffic limits, seasonal rest periods, and protective natural barriers prevents overcrowding and physical strain on aging bridges.
