When Growth
Ignores Balance

Fragile Forests Under Pressure

Meghalaya’s forests are vital for water, soil, and livelihoods. Unregulated development, from road cutting to logging dries streams, erodes soil, and threatens biodiversity. When forests vanish, so do traditional livelihoods like agro-forestry, weaving, and honey gathering.

Strain on Living Root Bridges

The Jingkieng Jri are centuries-old living bridges, but rapid tourism and haphazard construction put them at risk. Overcrowding, litter, and ecosystem damage threaten their survival. Without regulation, the very heritage drawing visitors may disappear.

Disruption of Community Livelihoods

Projects without community voices often disrupt farming, crafts, and forestbased work. Blocked streams, shrinking grazing lands, and commercial ventures push out local enterprises. True development must balancegrowth with Syrwet U Barim’s spirit of cooperation and reciprocity.
